400 Rabbis Travel to Washington to Protest on Behalf of European Jewry

About 400 rabbis traveled to Washington on October 6th, 1943, to protest outside of the White House and encourage the Government of the United States to act for the sake of Jewry in Europe. Rabbi Eliezer Silver, Rabbi Ze'ev Gold, and other rabbis are present among the protesters. The demonstrators sought to submit a memorandum to the President of the United States. Following the march, U.S. Vice President Wallace read in the Senate the memorandum that the rabbis submitted to him. A request was submitted to Congress that the President of the United States appoint a special governmental committee to find the means to save Jewry in Europe. The proposal was transferred for consideration to the Foreign Affairs Committee of Congress. כ400 רבנים נסעו לושינגטון ביום ז' תשרי תש"ד, למחות ולהתחנן על מדריגות הבית הלבן לממשלת ארצות-הברית לעשות ולפעול למען יהדות אירופה, נאם הרב אליעזר סילבר, הרב זאב גולד ועוד רבנים, מספרים שהמפגינים ביקשו להגיש התזכיר לידי נשיא ארה"ב, אך הלה פחד להיחשף ללחץ תקשורתי וזמן קצר לפני הצעדה חמק מהבית הלבן, בעקבות הצעדה הקריא בסינט סגן נשיא ארה"ב, וואלאס, את התזכיר שהגיש לו הרבנים, הוגש בקשה בקונגרס  שנשיא ארה"ב ימנה ועדה ממשלתית מיוחדת לאתר דרכים ואמצעים מיוחדים להצלת יהדות אירופה, ההצעה הועברה לטיפול הוועדה לעניני חוץ של הקונגרס, בתמונה: הרב אברהם יוסף יאסקע גוטסמן מיאס (מימין) מאזין לנאומו של הרב אליעזר סילבר בעת ההפגנה
